This is an explanation I rarely hear about, but is probably more common than people think. There've been a few times when I've seen "lights in the sky" that turned out to be somebody's brake light reflecting off my glasses from behind me.

Leaving aside Mr. Elizanadu's insaninininity, let's look at the "military pilots" and "police officers" being "trained observers" bullshit.

Just because someone is a trained observer it doesn't mean that they are supposed to be perfect and thus if they make a mistake they are suddenly not trained observers. That's like saying that Joe Kent is not an educated person because of his numerous failings here. He is obviously an educated person who just happens to be wrong far, far, far more often than an occasional pilot or police officer who sees something apparently odd during a late shift or long flight.

It's Joe Kent's own special way of saying that he knows next to nothing about pilot selection and training without coming right out and saying it. Maybe he watched a Soap Opera where one season the nerdy guy with Coca Cola bottle glasses guy is a High School senior and in the next season he is a commisioned officer flying a fighter jet and winning the heart of the cheerleader who turned him down for senior prom.

I don't think there is a required "trained observer" class or certification in trained observation. But it is baked into pilot training in terms of teaching how to distinguish various phenomena in the air and on the ground. Just like an ornithologist doesn't have a trained observer degree but can readily identify birds that aren't much more than a speak in the sky to the untrained.

So pilots are like birdwatchers? Gotcha. You know that birds are established things that actually exist, right? Big difference. James Jesus Audubon, the patron saint of pilots?

There is an aerial observer title in both the millitary and civilian realms with associated training. At one point there was even an aerial observer badge, but I think it goes by a different name now.
