"Now Voyager" Publishes Joint Profile of Graham Hancock and Flint Dibble

7/14/2026

Now Voyager, a new magazine for longform journalism, published a new 8,000-word story about Graham Hancock’s and Flint Dibble’s 4.5-hour-long debate on The Joe Rogan Experience in 2024. “Bones of Contention,” by freelance culture and entertainment journalist Chantel Tattoli, who frequently writes for the New York Times, provides biographies of both men, a brief account of their debate, and short coda about the new projects both men undertook afterward. I feel like, given the length of the story and the convoluted path it took to publication (it is believed to be the story that compelled Hancock to appear on a recent podcast to defend himself), there should be more to say about it. But there is nothing new in the story, certainly nothing to justify spending $160 for an annual subscription to Now Voyager, or even $7 for the article. Far from the devastating portrait Hancock feared, it’s a fairly straightforward recital of what most of my readers already know.
My biggest problem with the article is that it lacked a strong sense of purpose. Tattoli never quite decided if the article should be a tick-tock of the lead up to a titanic podcast clash (which might have been dramatically compelling with stronger reporting), a cultural evaluation of the lost civilization theme, or a meditation on the question of who represents “truth” in the twenty-first century. As a result, it isn’t really much of anything at all.

Tattoli is strongest in providing biographies of Hancock and Dibble, though much of the information is well-known. In Hancock’s case, he tried to get ahead of the elements that might have surprised readers—particularly some of his father’s more unpleasant behavior—by telling the same stories, in nearly the same words, on the Diary of CEO podcast. Tattoli does a good job of tracing both men’s paths toward representing their respective sides of the Atlantis question and the role that their respective upbringings played in shaping their worldviews.

However, where Tattoli walks up to insight, she never quite achieves the goal. She discusses, for instance, the similarities between Graham Hancock’s books and those of Ignatius Donnelly. She says that Hancock “discovered” Donnelly in the late 1980s and that “Hancock had found a soul brother.” However, whether due to authorial oversight or editorial negligence, no proof supports these statements, and it is unclear whether Hancock actually believed this or whether Tattoli is speaking metaphorically. We know from the introduction to Fingerprints of the Gods, where Hancock name-checks Donnelly as an inspiration, that he read him, but it would have been nice to have in his own words or from evidence exactly how he felt about Donnelly. As best I can tell, Tattoli never asked and extrapolated two paragraphs about Donnelly from that single sentence in Fingerprints.

Similarly, throughout the piece there is an overreliance on previously published interviews, giving the story a dated, half-hearted feeling. Tattoli met with Hancock in person and spent the day with him at Stonehenge, and yet most of what we hear from him in the story comes from other interviews and previously published writings. Since Dibble has much less on record, his half of the story is more clearly rooted in the day they spent together in Athens.

Despite the article’s great length, it is oddly hollow. Tattoli’s account of the Rogan debate contains no fresh insights. There are no interviews with Rogan or his staff, very little reference to statistics about viewership, no real reporting into what went on behind the scenes. It’s mostly just a summary of the video as seen on YouTube. — No, that’s not quite right. It talks about the debate without really getting into the weeds of claims involved. Throughout the story, Tattoli references specific claims and bits of evidence, but she paints no overarching picture of the evidentiary case or its underpinnings—particularly what Hancock considers his strongest suit, the use of myths and legends. (Despite Tattoli framing the argument as Hancock vs. archaeology, his books are as much about history, mythology, and folklore as they are about archaeological evidence.) Compare, for example, my review of Hancock’s Magicians of the Gods where I outline the argument and where it goes wrong, showing how Hancock assembles the pieces and how the house of cards collapses under its own weight. Granted, we are writing for vastly different audiences, but without that kind of granular understanding of the intricacies of the evidence, the piece can’t help but portray Hancock as more or less the equal of the archaeology he condemns.

It's clear that Tattoli thinks Hancock is wrong and a crank, but the article was far from a full-throated condemnation of pretenders to science. She devoted too much space to personality to do more than sketch the actual stakes involved and why it is that so many are attracted to epic fantasies about the past, and why they care so passionately about an imaginary lost civilization. “While Hancock’s beliefs have not, on balance, changed much since the nineties,” she concludes, “the collective consciousness has edged closer and closer to his frame of mind. In the United States, media and science literacy has collapsed, replaced by the ‘do your own research’ mentality of Facebook antivaxxers, and the valuation of amateurs ‘just asking questions’ above experts.” This is the kind of assertion that ought to be proven from the article, not simply accepted as a truism.

All in all, “Bones of Contention” is not a bad article, but also not a good one. It might serve to introduce readers of longform journalism to the personalities involved in a now years-old Joe Rogan podcast, but I expected something more, or at least something new.

The existence of Atlantis doesn't rest on the account of Plato alone.

All of ancient history is an echo of Atlantis. The topographies (and especially toponyms) of Greece, Egypt and Israel deliberately mirrored Atlantis. And Atlantis itself mirrored the helio-scape of our local galactic "commonwealth," which is centered around the stars Sirius, Procyon, Castor and Pollux. You know, the whole "As Above, So Below" Hermetic Code thing. It's similar to how so many toponyms in New England were taken from England. If England had sunk and no longer existed, we would have to invent it (lol).

Hancock is a gifted writer. If he had stuck to describing ancient sites as a journalist, then he would likely be as universally beloved as, I dare say, David Attenborough.

Even so, Hancock will eventually be able to claim that his life work is vindicated, maybe even in his own lifetime, and simply due to the extraordinary nature of the subject matter he has covered. The same goes for the "Ancient Astronaut Theorists," among which Hancock does not appear to be a card carrying member. They are legends merely for calling our attention to "phlenomalous anogenons" (sic).

I was once content to just read about ancient mysteries and watch programs about them. But, I'm no longer content with velvet verbiage and eye-candy. I also became incensed by mindless academic documentaries, like Strip the Cosmos. I wanted answers. And, sometimes when you need a job done right, you have to do it yourself. There is a place for criticism and skepticism, but determinism is a higher calling.

In other news ...

In light of government threats / promises to release more UAP data, scientists are caucusing to ensure they hold the party line.

I don't think there is much danger of "over-disclosure" though (lol).

G'runt, you are so juiced up on debunking hormones that you can't even think straight. You don't have the constitution for this. You are far too tender. So, you hide behind a mask and take pot shots. And it's best to remain behind that defilade soldier, because I'm sure the people that process your security clearance would be pleased to know that although you slander others in your spare time, therapy has been helpful to you in the past. Go back to just being the nice guy you are at heart. As for K'ant, I don't think there is any hope (lol).

"The existence of Atlantis doesn't rest on the account of Plato alone."

Well that's just, like, your opinion man. It really does, Chuckpop. Plato is clear that he's telling a story about someone telling a story. Atlantis is as real as The Hundred Acre Wood.

Are you hip to the historical-critical method? You're no Thorwald Franke. Apparently you're of the Nothing Spells Scholarship Like "(lol)" and Two "(lol)"s Spells it Even Harder School.

Your comment is such a typical example of academic hubris, or academic wannabee hubris, as it may be. Rather than letting someone’s insights stand on their own merits, you have to try to prejudice everyone against them with vague denouncements and ad hominem attacks. Is that really still considered state-of-the-art debunkmanship. It is how women argue with their husbands. It's all emotional bluster.

Debunking, especially as you practice it, is a waste of time. As I mentioned previously, I would rather use my time and energy to replace a bad model with a much better one.

You and G'runt should invoice the Deep State for your services. If the world was run by people like you, Nazis would look like total sweethearts. Cancel Culture is dead. Give it up!!

"prejudice everyone against them with vague denouncements and ad hominem attacks." Oh (lol) I'm sorry (lol) was I being vague? (lol) I think you are an ass who in a just universe would have been killed by a random (lol) street "NBA player" (your term lol) in a still unsolved street crime decades ago (lol). It's totes adorbs that you think Democratizitians are the party of anti-semitism. That's not how things work here in Tel Aviv West. Once you clue in to the fact that Three Days of the Condor and It Takes a Thief are the same movie despite one being a TV show it all makes sense.

You strike me as a Breatharian, someone who perfectly drastically and happily (lol) subsists (lol) on eating his own farts (lol). But I have a question, una pregunta (lol) as our now and future housemates (lol) from the Global South (lol) might say: does the Only Your Own Farts Diet (lol) create poop (lol)? If you were to eat your own poops (lol) would that result in some sort of leveling up (lol) to a hitherto unexplored level of nonsensery and generally being a huge ass (lol)?

Just to be clear (lol) in the nicest possible way (lol) I am indeed (lol) urging you to eat your own shit (lol). You seem awfully keen on force-feeding it to everyone else (lol).

How could you possibly know that?

As I barely understand from your written replies, your worldview of history can be summarized in Shakespeare's quote that goes like, "all the world is a stage, and we are merely players."

Manly P. Hall expressed a similar worldview. Do you agree?

Guess you may also agree with Mark Twain's quote that goes like, "history may not repeat itself, but it sure does rhyme."

Have you ever written an article as a guest featured on Graham Hancock's website? Think you would be more welcome there.

Why did you mention astronauts in reply to a rare blog post in which Jason did not mention extraterrestrial life in summer, the season when the subject dominates fringe media for unknown reasons? Are you familiar with the fringe idea that claimed Atlantis was allegedly founded by ancient alien astronauts who sought to reestablish their lost empire in space once again anew on Earth? Why did you mention the names of two of the three bright stars forming the Winter Triangle and the two brightest stars in Gemini?

Members of the Society of Ancient Astronaut Theorists wear lapel pins that resemble miniature replicas of Colombian Gold Flyers. No idea if they also carry membership cards or other paperwork.

The government has had nothing to do with S.E.T.I. ever since Congress stopped funding the organization decades ago. Articles from the Weekly World News were entered into the Congressional Record to make the case. Disclosure activist Stephen Basset considered that decision favorable for Disclosure. Unidentified anomalous phenomena can be anything, and therefore do not necessarily have to have anything to do with extraterrestrial life.

The world really is THE stage for those elites that still run the show. And, yes, I wrote a two-volume opus on the Shakespeare Plays, which identifies the royal persons represented by every character of every play. They were running game then, and they still do today. Except they now document the relationships through Disney movies instead. History repeats itself, because there is a group of people that makes sure that it does! It's how they maintain the control.

I'm not actually welcome anywhere. If my cameo appearance here is any indication, my work still rains on everyone's parade. My posts have thus far been allowed here, so that is to the credit of Jason Colavito. I just didn't expect his "bouncers" to be such "petulant pussy cats" (lol). Maybe, JC is ready to toss them out??

The Biblical Exodus story encodes that the arrival of the "Watchers" on Earth was only part of a larger mission that re-organized our local galactic "hood." The refugees brought with those "Watchers" were not resettled on Earth, but in other star systems nearby. They were evidently not compatible with the Earth's environment, but more suited to conditions around brown and red dwarf suns. Rather than transplant them here, the "Watchers" upgraded the species of hominids that already existed on Earth.

Hello, Charles N. Pope. Please reconsider doing R.C.H.'s show.

https://www.theothersideofmidnight.com/

I am listening to a replay as I type these comments. Please reach out to the producers so audiences may listen to something new. Sure whatever you want to say must be fresh enough for someone. If you do not want to talk with Richard, or if Richard is unable to talk with you because New Mexico's summer weather prevents it, then please request the producer team host in lieu of Richard that night. Both producers have capably hosted excellent episodes in the past. Your conspiracy theory about secret codes hidden in Disney films resembles that of Christopher L. Knowles.

https://secretsun.blogspot.com/

Think you would get along just fine with Christopher L. Knowles who says a secret cult controls things by performing rituals that involve ritually sacrificing celebrities for various nefarious goals. Honestly, Christopher L. Knowles's blog is much too depressing.

The Watchers's arrival on Earth was told in Genesis, not Exodus. The apocryphal Book of Enoch has more details on the Watchers.

Honestly, I do not know anything about a larger mission to reorganize the local galactic neighborhood that involved refugees. Reminds me of various stories available to read on the internet. Some claim spaceships of a Draconian Empire entered Lyra where a misunderstanding led to the disappearances of three planets which led refugees of Lyra to spread throughout the galaxy. Others said wars devastated planets near the Apex Star in Lyra. While I do not recognize the tale you wrote, it seems familiar. R.C.H. often said the solar system was reorganized in the past. This is all standard Ancient Astronaut Theory shown on television.

"Except they now document the relationships through Disney movies" - you surely must realize how this sounds for the people that are not you, don't you?

Charles N. Pope link

The Book of Genesis of course mentions the "Sons of God" who "came down." These correspond to the "second generation" members of the pantheon, such Horus the Elder and Set. Set would have been the true father of the Nephilim Shem by a "mortal woman." Nephilim Ham (Horus the Younger, referred to as the first "royal person") would have been true son of Horus the Elder (Mehushael / Michael / Yaddi-el), and only the honorary son of Osiris (Mehujael / Raphael / Asa-el).

The Book of Exodus is a composite of evacuation events led by the Moses figures of Pepi-Sargon, Auibre Hor-Hammurabi and Amenhotep IV-Akhenaten. However, these historical period events (from Egyptian Old, Middle and New Kingdoms) are patterned after a "cosmic castaway" evacuation led by the Watchers. Do you follow??

The Disney movie, "The Black Cauldron" (1985) featured the infamous "self-sacrifice" scene, which went over about as well as Mesha's sacrifice in 2 Kings 3. Even that seems rather tame compared to the content of more recent Disney movies.

Of course I know how silly it sounds that Disney movies are being used for Deep State messaging. Yet, it's no more silly (and no less popular) than the Shakespeare plays of the first Queen Elizabeth's reign.

It's actually somewhat touching that before her death the second Queen Elizabeth would offer an apology for her role in the JFK assassination and for escalating the Cold War with Russia. But, I suppose it's not much of an apology if no one can understand and consider it as such.

Surely, everyone can comprehend that the Disney movie "Wish" is a political commentary on Kamala's rise to power and her role in taking down Trump as "King Mag(a)nifico." Kamala was even anointed by Abigail Disney to replace "Saba" Biden as the next President of the United States. Kamala is, in fact, a "Disney Darling." One of the top execs at Disney, Dana Walden, even set Kamala up with Doug Emhoff. But, the movie "Wish" is doing much, much more. It is preserving for posterity the identities of Kamala's biological parents and her true place within the "Disney Kingdom."

One interesting thing I found is that "Scientologists" on the authority of "L Ron Hubbard" also insist that aliens built Atlantis before it was destroyed...

They also say, entirely on the authority of L. Ron Hubbard, that the Aliens built a space station underneath the Pyrenees mountains around 1200 BC that intercepts the souls of dead humans and programs them for reincarnation.

Now here is all the archaeological evidence for a physical alien station buried under the Pyrenees: NOTHING

The evidence consists of "seers" who were able to use their "psychokinetic" powers to "look" under the mountain. It's a big industry getting suckers to spend money motivated by that hope

Like was said above, it's all as real as the hundred acre wood of Winnie the Pooh.

Hello, Kent. Have a cool disco dancing American Egg Roll, but hopefully not one in a wrapper made with eggs of American egrets.

Scientology's version of Atlantis was obviously based on Theosophy's version of Atlantis, not Plato's or of anybody earlier. Plato's dialogues say Atlantis was founded when Poseidon found the last cave woman on the island she had five pairs of twin sons. That is what Plato's dialogues said about the founding of Atlantis. Cult leaders could make a case for gods as misunderstood aliens if they could trace the ancestries of the Greek mountain gods of Olympus to earlier generations of gods from the sky, not on Earth. This is all standard Ancient Astronaut Theory shown on television.

L. Ron Hubbard said, "the last Martian report station on Earth was established in the Pyrenees."

That place must be the Lost Mountain between France and Spain. Obviously not a space station if it is under a mountain not in orbit. That place is one of four remotely viewed by Pat Price and others. True how no evidence for the existence of the station was found. The same applies for the other three legendary stations. All four mountains are popular destinations for tourism, and no tourists have found any evidence for those four legendary stations. Either they do not exist, or their physical entrances are perfectly hidden.

Should someone do a class action lawsuit against psychic spies?

Wood is real, and some woods can span a hundred acres or more.

Due to "post-glacial rebound" and rising sea levels the Mid-Atlantic Ridge has sunk considerably since the end of the last ice age. Sea levels have risen around 400 feet. At the same time, the Earth's crust along the Mid-Atlantic Ridge has subsided by at least that much, which means that significantly more land mass was above sea level along the ridge during the ice age. We just need Robert Ballard to go looking for it (lol).

The Mid-Atlantic Ridge would have further been one of the few places with sufficient rainfall to support food production and fauna during the depths of the ice age.

P.S.

Unfortunately, the boundary between tectonic plates is about the least likely places to find archaeological remains. Still, it might be possible for geologists to determine where someone like Ballard should look for remains of Atlantis along the Mid-Atlantic Ridge or the portion of the African Plate boundary that extends from the Gates of Gibraltar to the Mid-Atlantic Ridge.
