I am proud to share the cover of my new book Jimmy: The Secret Life of James Dean, out this fall from Applause Books, and imprint of Bloomsbury Publishing. It was a long, challenging road to develop an attractive cover that captured the feel of the book, but I think this one more than succedeed.

I must concur with my learned colleague. I know covers are largely the publisher's domain, but the red and the black, the sans-serif, the good enough to be perfect photo... classic.

Seconding what Jim says -- I think it's really eye-catching as well as clearly conveying what the book's about in a single glance, and imagine it's gonna be good for display/ad copy. Congrats!

Wrong Cartoon

While you were doing research for your book, you mentioned a lady by the name of Vampira. I believe the woman's real name was Kathy. I had asked if that character had ever appeared on Bugs Bunny. The answer of course to that was no. Turns out, I was recalling the wrong Cartoon. Woody Woodpecker had a character named Vampira. Massage this morning when I turned on the TV. Is this cartoon character based upon the same person?

"Vampira" was the stage name of Maila Nurmi. Yes, she was famous enough to be parodied in cartoons, though more typically a cartoon was directly inspired by Morticia Addams and borrowed the Vampira name, since she appeared as a real-life Morticia. (This was especially true prior to the 1964 TV series, which gave Morticia her name.)

In this particular episode, she was portrayed as a goofy woman with a lust for diamonds. I don't believe the animator had a good opinion of whomever the inspiration was. Your comment will be posted after it is approved.
