It was a big week in the world of UFOs. Rep. Eric Burlison pursued his new obsession, getting MIT to release a film from the 1950s of a Project Blue Book investigator briefing a group of scientists on UFOs. Burlison seems to think there was secret information conveyed, even though Cpt. Edward J. Ruppelt left detailed notes, published long ago, explaining the contents of the briefing and the questions MIT scientists asked. Meanwhile, Rep. Anna Paulina Luna said on a podcast that she is working with Trump Administration official Steven Miller to secure immunity for UFO whistleblowers who claim to know where the alien bodies are hidden. Coincidentally, Sky in the UK is currently airing a multipart documentary called The Alien Autopsy Scandal about the notorious 1990s alien autopsy hoax.

This week in my Library, I posted an original translation of a classic investigation into the lost manuscript that introduced the claim that the Apostle St. Thomas traveled to the Americas after the Resurrection, a claim that later mutated into the infamous assertion that white Atlanteans brough culture to ancient America.

This week, the same members of Congress who have been pushing UFO hearings on the legislative body held a hearing into MKULTRA, a wildly unethical Cold War-era CIA mind-control program. MKULTRA was exposed in 1975. Congress held hearings and released documents in 1977, and the CIA published most of its remaining MKULTRA documents in 2001. (Most were destroyed on the orders of the CIA director, in a coverup exposed in the ’70s.) This week’s hearing had no new revelations and no real purpose, and even as an exercise in history it quickly went off the rails, with GOP representatives veering into all manner of anti-science conspiracy theories, suggesting that the real purpose of the hearing was to sow doubt about science, especially vaccines. I recommend Mother Jones’ insightful write-up of the farcical hearing.
At the end of the week, Rep. Anna Paulina Luna, who chaired the MKULTRA hearing, must have realized it was a bust because she went on Glenn Beck’s show to talk UFOs and tease a supposed forthcoming official announcement that “the phenomenon is real,” while her partner in lunacy, Eric Burlison, told podcaster Jesse Michels that he believes Trump has been briefed on alien-human hybrids walking among us.
New in My Library
New in my Library this week, I have a collection of early Spanish documents recording the alleged Aztec story of the Tower of Babel, though these are not entirely what they seem. I also have posted my translation of the first eight fragments of John of Antioch’s seventh-century Chronicle, presenting a euhemerist history of Assyria, Egypt, and Greece.

On Friday, the U.S. Department of Defense released another tranche of UFO files, and to no one’s surprise, they included still more videos of balloons that pilots could not recognize and mistook for alien spaceships, prompting the government to investigate possible aliens. To underscore just how seriously the Trump Administration is taking the release, they gave early access to the files to Dr. Phil McGraw, the controversial talk show host, who released a series of videos claiming he is now convinced alien abductions are real, that UFOs are targeting nuclear facilities, and that the government (which, remember, just gave him exclusive early access to the files) is conspiring against the public to cover it all up. The release came only a day after journalist Michael Shellenberger revealed (in a subscription-only X post) that in the 1970s, the CIA funded experiments on teenagers aimed at turning them into psychic warriors—research that led into Project Stargate, the psychic spy program that had Lue Elionzdo convince he could kill with astral projection. Stargate’s failure sent some of the looney pseudoscientists behind it into ufology where they continued hunting supernatural monsters on the government’s dime.
Meanwhile, gigantologist Jim Vieira is Graham Hancock’s author of the month, promoting his new book Footprints of the Gods in which he alleges that polydactyly is diagnostic of giants and universally recognized among ancient peoples. This is untrue. Most stories of giants have no mention of extra fingers, and many mentions of polydactyly in ancient times have nothing to do with giants. (Mesopotamian omen literature, for instance, discusses it as a sign of positive or negative future events, depending on which limbs in a newborn have extra fingers.) It did however become a common thread in Victorian (fake) newspaper accounts of giant bones, modeled after the Biblical giant of Gath. Vieira has promised to send me a copy of the book, which he says has new evidence overlooked by academics, and I will have more to say when I have had a chance to read it.

Recently, my web hosting service announced that it has begun a phased discontinuation of service. It will cease operations in 67 countries by the end of the summer. This does not currently affect the United States, and they claim that they will continue operations in the United States for the foreseeable future. However, they have stopped updating their web publishing tools. It seems obvious that the writing is on the wall. I have started to look into alternatives, but I face the same problem I faced when they tried pricing me out of their service years ago: I have more than 15 years’ worth of blog posts, which constitute the majority of my writing output over that time, and that archive can’t easily transfer to a new service because they were produced with a blogging app. Additionally, I have long been under a lifetime price lock that I have had for more than a decade. Many competing services that claim to be able to port over my whole site in a compatible format would triple (or more) my hosting costs, making it unaffordable. So, I have a range of not very good options to avoid having my website—including thousands of blog posts and millions of words of translations and scholarship—disappear from the internet.
