Happy New Year! As we get ready to start a new year of crazy claims and wacky ideas, I invite you to start by taking a look back at the past twelve months in fringe history with my year in review. There’s a lot to look forward to in 2016, including more Ancient Aliens, more on the “Roman” sword from Oak Island, and the launch of new Nephilim-themed media. It should be weird!

The new year hasn’t brought a lot in the world of fringe history claims, which is perhaps why it was a bit of a surprise to see the president of Honduras embrace an almost certainly fictional legend of the White City in an effort to boost tourism and foreign investment in the country. Meanwhile in this country Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton suggested that she is open to the ancient astronaut theory, telling a newspaper that she doesn’t know whether aliens have visited the earth in the past, but that it’s a possibility.

News
This week erstwhile TREASURE FORCE COMMANDER and current HISTORY HERETIC J. Hutton Pulitzer used his podcast to attack me as nothing more than a “science fiction writer” who is actively draining the Nova Scotia economy of cash by doubting whether a Roman sword had truly been found off Oak Island forty years ago. I had no idea I was so powerful! Some of the Nova Scotians I supposedly deprived of money even had me on News 95.7 this week to talk about the sword! On the other hand, Pulitzer’s rage gets him what he wants: more attention devoted to him, allowing him to present himself as a major fringe history figure.

News
This week Curse of Oak Island declared the putatively “Roman” sword championed by onetime Treasure Force Commander and current History Heretic J. Hutton Pulitzer a modern fake, with lab tests showing it was likely made after 1880. Pulitzer threw a fit and declared a conspiracy by the History Channel to suppress the truth in order to milk Oak Island for 100 episodes. One would think that, ratings-wise, finding something real would be better for viewership, but then again, I’m not a History Heretic.

On Friday, a producer for an upcoming television series contacted me to ask for my help. She was certain that she didn’t want me for the host of the new “hidden history” series, but she hoped that I could assist in finding someone is obsessed with finding the “truth” and believes that there is a conspiracy afoot to suppress that truth. She said that she figured I was the most likely person to be able to point her to the right fringe theorist. I’m torn between telling her that it would go against everything I support to help another conspiracy theorist get on TV and pointing her toward some of the paranoid nut-jobs that have engaged in harassment and threatening behavior.

I am dumbfounded that Taco Bell is going to promote the ancient astronaut theory during the Super Bowl by featuring wild-haired ancient astronaut theorist Giorgio Tsoukalos in an advertisement for its newest product. The logic of it escapes me a bit: 1.6 million people watch Ancient Aliens, while more than 110 million Americans watch the Super Bowl and 35 million eat at Taco Bell each week. However, Taco Bell says that it tries to reach Millennial customers who fall into the categories of “dudes” and “social explorers,” so I guess that’s who they think will find their ad funny, or at least know who Giorgio Tsoukalos is.

- This week I had an offer from Vice Media to appear in a piece they’re doing for the new Viceland channel, which will be replacing H2 at the end of the month. Unfortunately, they gave me less than 24 hours’ notice and wanted me in Brooklyn (at my expense, of course), which was a little difficult for me to pull off. Regrettably, I had to decline.
- The next few days are supposed to see the release of J. Hutton Pulitzer’s report on the metallurgy of the allegedly “Roman” Oak Island sword. It won’t be the big report covering his whole alternative paradigm of history (that one doesn’t have a release date), so I can’t say I’m too excited about the upcoming release.

News
It’s been a bit quieter than normal in the fringe history world this week. We didn’t get a lot of crazy new claims this week, and “Roman” sword advocate J. Hutton Pulitzer missed his announced deadline of releasing his analysis of the allegedly ancient Oak Island sword by Feb. 15. Instead, we were treated to the spectacle of the House of Representatives using archaeology as a poster child for science that is not in the “national interest” as part of an effort to assert more political control over how the National Science Foundation spends money.

It’s been another rather quiet week in the world of fringe history. It’s funny how the lack of new fringe content on the History Channel since Curse of Oak Island and Ancient Aliens went on hiatus has put a bit of a damper on new weird claims. I guess everyone’s waiting for spring to unleash a new round of unusual ideas. However, this puts a bit of strain on me: I used to get two or three blog posts a week from TV’s fringe shows. It’s hard to find new material when the fringe world isn’t producing it fast enough!

This week we said goodbye the H2 network after a little more than three years of operation. The channel, which replaced the well-regarded but low rated History International channel in late 2012, dumped its predecessor’s slate of international-themed history shows, including the American broadcast of the British Time Team, in favor of wall to wall fringe history. While programs like Ancient Aliens, America Unearthed, Missing in Alaska, Legend of Superstition Mountains, and others improved the network’s ratings, they were no match for corporate synergy. As the fringe history market reached saturation thanks to competition from the newly revamped and batshit crazy Destination America, the channel’s owner gave the space to Vice Media, which they co-own. The network’s greatest legacy was serving as the canary in the coal mine, presaging the rise of Donald Trump and the revitalization of white revanchist ideology with its programs focusing on how white people were the driving force in history and the rightful owners of America from the beginning of time to the end of days.

This week a mentally ill man made headlines by shooting a pastor he accused of being a Reptilian alien before flying to Washington to try to convince Pres. Obama to do more to combat the Martians he believed controlled the American and Israeli governments. While the story was quite sad, it was a pretty good microcosm of the paranoid style in fringe history and the consequences of acting on the beliefs fringe historians profess to hold. The sad thing is that if you substitute “Jews” or “liberals” for “Martians,” the same conspiracy theory suddenly becomes indistinguishable from a large swath of recent political discourse.

This week the History Channel and Chrysler teamed up to deceive the audience for the network’s Vikings dramatic series. In a promotional spot advertising Chrysler’s Ram pickup trucks, from its Dodge division, History offered “enhanced” content providing historical background on the Vikings, which in this instance was a fabrication presented by Scott Wolter of America Unearthed alleging that the descendants of the Vikings colonized Minnesota in the 1300s. I hope Chrysler is proud of its part in making America just a little bit dumber.

Happy Easter to those celebrating this weekend! No, this holiday is not named after Ishtar or Astarte, no matter how many Facebook memes claim so. But it was a big week overall in the world of fringe history, from Robert Schoch launching a $600,000 fundraising effort so he can go tell the Easter Islanders their ancestors were too stupid and primitive to carve statues to Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers announcing his spiritual contemplation of the Watchers and other ancient astronauts. It’s as though the nicer spring weather jump-started fringe history for 2016 after a quiet first three months.

- This week the History Channel announced that Ancient Aliens will be returning for a new season in May. I’m not sure whether that is a promise or a threat, but it means we’re on track for another round of crazy claims in just a few weeks’ time.

I can’t provide more details while the show is still in production, but the documentary crew may be interested in having me appear, depending on the direction they decide to go with the final product.

It was a week in which fringe writers decided to give up on alien spacecraft, in which Scott Wolter doubled down on crazy claims that pirates and Freemasons are conspiring to lead the world into a feminist paradise, and in which the Nephilim had a good week in music but a very bad one in genetics.

I’ve spent a good portion of this week working on a redesign of my website, and I think the new graphics are coming along well. My homepage has been revamped, and you can now view my latest blog posts directly from the homepage and not just from the blog page itself. I’ve wanted to do that for a while now, but I hadn’t had a widget that looked good enough on the page. If you haven’t seen the changes, be sure to check them out!

I spent some time this week taking a deep dive into my website’s page view statistics in order to determine what material gets the most hits. The results were not terribly surprising: My blog receives by far the greatest number of page views on my site. But I was dumbfounded that in my Library, the most popular pages weren’t the ancient texts that I have spent so much time translating. The single most popular Library page was W. B. Scott’s “American Elephant Myths” article from 1887. I can’t fathom why, but it’s the current leader in page views in the Library.

This week I did some spring cleaning and got rid of several boxes of books. It’s rather amazing how many I’ve accumulated over the years, and I was quite surprised in looking through the boxes of them how few ended up being memorable or useful. Some I hadn’t touched in 15 or 20 years. A lot of them were pretty bad, frankly, and I can’t fathom how I used to have the time to read so many books on topics I don’t think I’d ever consider again. I once bought an entire book on the history of the search for a better red dye. I think what I miss most is having that kind of free time to read so much and so randomly.

I’m not sure what was more disappointing this week: that Ancient Aliens returned for its eleventh (!) season after a seven-month hiatus, or that A+E Networks has started an annual Ancient Aliens fan convention that folds the ancient astronaut theory into the broader field of science fiction. Alien Con 2016, to be held Halloween weekend, brings in Famous Monsters of Filmland to merge together aliens and genre fiction. On the one hand, it’s a startling accurate classification for ancient astronauts (and the name Alien Con is unintentionally accurate, too), but on the other hand it cheapens and degrades genre fiction by mixing its most shameless derivative in beside it.

If you happen to speak French, be sure to check out an article this week from La Presse in Montreal where I’m interviewed about the claim made last week that a 15-year-old Canadian boy discovered a lost Maya city using a Postclassic Maya constellation list. I discussed some of the reasons for doubting the claim, and after I spoke to La Presse archaeologists and Maya experts weighed in with evidence that the supposed lost city was actually an abandoned agricultural field.

This week brought a bit of a surprise when two anti-academic conspiracy theorists joined forces to create a super-conspiracy fringe history hit squad. J. Hutton Pulitzer, Oak Island gadfly and operator of low quality websites, teamed up with Scott Wolter, former America Unearthed host and irregular blogger. Their new company is called XpLrR and promises a multimedia scientific investigation of fringe history mysteries with the goal of finding the “truth” through the medium of producing streaming entertainment. Like any good squad, they also have squad goals: They plan to link unidentified “tombs” in North America to Jesus conspiracies. As of this writing, the pair’s lack of media savvy resulted in an unfinished website for the company, hashtags that connect to no content, and an ungrammatical press release. They’re off to a great start!

When even the mainstream media decided to run stories this week about how Donald Trump uses conspiracy theories to manipulate his audience, it became quite clear that conspiracy theories are having their moment in the sun. Trump’s gleeful promotion of the debunked and disproved seems to be giving aid and comfort to all those who would willfully lie for gain, and it’s probably no wonder that fringe historians seem to have collectively woken from several months of relative quiet to barrage us with a wide range of conspiracies, vitriol, and grandstanding. It will probably only get worse from here.

As many of you like read on my blog this week, I’m thinking about ways to revamp this newsletter. I’ve determined that there are four key options:
- Reduce the newsletter to biweekly while increasing the length of the newsletter and perhaps adding an exclusive commentary or bonus content.
- Reduce the newsletter to monthly but produce it as a formatted magazine-style PDF with some of my best blog posts of the month and additional content.
- Keep a weekly newsletter that links to my blog posts for the week as a “digest” but deliver a formatted PDF once per month.
- Keep everything the way it is.

- This weekend Scott Wolter managed to stumble into a theological controversy by declaring in comments on his blog that only a denial of the divinity of Christ allows one to practice “true Christian values.” Wolter added that the “real treasure” of Christianity is the bones of Jesus, and that true Christians are the bloodline descendants of his union with Mary Magdalene. How long before Bloodline theorists start putting forward a candidate for Last World Emperor based on their zany genealogical claims?
