On June 25, 1947, Kenneth Arnold launched the modern UFO era when he claimed to see objects flying like skipped discs in Washington State. On July 3, 1947 San Francisco occultist Ole J. Sneide, an eccentric with a Theosophical bent and a belief that he could teleport around the galaxy, became the first person known to have connected flying saucers to the ancient astronaut theory. His ideas are clearly derivative of Theosophy and its Masters from other worlds, but here at the dawn of the UFO era, all of the major claims of modern ufology and ancient astronautics were already in place. Sneide published his thoughts in a letter to the San Francisco Chronicle that was picked up by the UP news wire later that same day. This version ran in the Cincinnati Enquirer on July 4, 1947. It appears here because as best I can tell the UP copyright was not renewed as required by law, and Sneide's copyright expired as well, since he died a month after the letter was published.

Saucer Mystery Solved?
“Oblate Spheroid Ships” from Older Planets, Says “Teleportation” Expert.
San Francisco, July 3—(UP)—A San Franciscan asked in a letter to the editor today what was the matter with America that it didn’t know those mysterious flying saucers were space ships form another solar system.
He shuddered to think what would happen if the U. S. Army got tough about the reconnoitering discs.
Ole J. Sneide, San Francisco, said in a letter in “Safety Valve,” the letters column of the San Francisco Chronicle, that those flying discs were “oblate spheroid space ships from the older planets.”
“Usually they travel in outer space with speeds approximating that of light by use of anti-gravity devices and hyperspace. In our space they travel much slower, and, of course, become visible either by intent or by accident, for in their travels they use the invisibility screen,” he said.
“This space navigation has been going on for millions of years, these ‘nova’ having come into our galaxy originally from the Great Magellanic Cloud via the Lesser Magellanic Cloud, 47 Tucanae, Omega and Alpha Centauri clusters.
“Their masters planted the original humanities here and which did not develop sui generis * * * They have been absent from our planet since before the fall of the Roman Empire when the Great Master left earth for the outer galaxy by fohatic teleportation.
“He is now back and what is going to be done depends upon mankind, but my advice is that physical man set up no belligerence, for a small concentration of those disks just beyond the range of our atmosphere could clean the surface of our planet completely in a matter of less than 24 hours.
“Their present local headquarters is on the unseen side of our moon. I discovered this by teleportation visits hither and yon in and between our galaxy.
“Mankind,” he concluded, “will just have to learn their physics all over again, someday, if they live. Ah! If they live!”
