Happy New Year, everyone! As we open 2014, be sure to check out my interview with Matt Staggs over on RandomHouse’s sci-fi website suvudu.com promoting Cthulhu in World Mythology. The latest word from the publisher is that the eBook should be available be February 1 and the print edition by March 1. (Yes, I know we’ve had release dates before, but this time I’m promised that it really will happen.)

- Cthulhu in World Mythology should be out in eBook this week, possibly as early as Monday. I’ll be posting an announcement as soon as it’s ready.
- McFarland Publishers released the cover design for Jason and the Argonauts through the Ages. You can view it on the Jason and the Argonauts book website, which I’ve begun updating in anticipation of the book’s summer release. I’m not going to pretend it’s the cover I would have designed, but I think I did some good work trying to come up with a graphic design package to support it. It wasn’t easy with their blue and orange color scheme.
- I’m also close to a contract for an anthology of ancient texts used by fringe history writers to support everything from ancient astronauts to Jesus conspiracies to cryptozoology. It should be a fun book, but it will be a lot of work to develop the critical apparatus for the texts.

The eBook for Cthulhu in World Mythology is now available for purchase at Amazon.com. It will be available on other platforms over the next few days, with a print edition to follow later in the month. I believe that while the print edition will be paperback the publisher is planning a limited run of special hardcovers. The publisher will be making an official announcement about publication tomorrow. It’s all very exciting, and I’m so glad that the book is finally out there.

On Friday I received the page proofs for Jason and the Argonauts through the Ages. I’m very excited that the book is scheduled to go to the printers on March 23, for release shortly thereafter. However, I am daunted by the idea of trying to proofread and index a nearly 200,000-word text in just three weeks. It’s going to be an enormous amount of work. I hope all of you will find it to be worth it when the book comes out this spring.

News
This week I’ve been working on proofreading and indexing Jason and the Argonauts. It’s been a slog, and I’m only two-thirds of the way done. I was dismayed to see that the typesetter turned me into an accidental plagiarist by running a block quote as part of the body text, so I have to make doubly sure that the publisher corrects that error before the book goes to print. I don’t think, though, that anyone would seriously think it was my writing: I don’t tend to use “thee” and “thy” in my own prose.

- I’ve finally finished proofing and indexing Jason and the Argonauts through the Ages! I’ve returned the manuscript to the publisher, and it’s set to go to the printer on March 23, for release not long thereafter. I’m very happy that this project is now in its final stages.
- Some of you were not happy with my review of Hangar 1 last week, and I received some angry replies to my newsletter accusing me of being a CIA stooge and of not having appropriate contacts in the CIA who can confirm everything. It’s interesting that people get very angry at a review that never once renders a judgment on the question of UFOs in general but instead simply evaluated whether the TV show presented verifiable evidence. The show presented fabricated documents, but somehow that’s OK as long as it furthers a belief system? Color me confused.

Surprisingly, for once this has been a quiet week. I’ve been continuing to work on my anthology of ancient texts used in fringe history claims, and I’m at the point now where I have more texts than space available in the volume. It’s difficult to choose what to eliminate. Unfortunately, Goethe’s encounter with a UFO (actually a cloud of fireflies) has to go since it’s a bit less ancient than the others, and Goethe himself says it wasn’t anything supernatural.

News
- This week Jason and the Argonauts through the Ages heads off to the printer! McFarland will be releasing it sometime in the next couple of months, and I will keep you posted as publication nears.
- I have to say I’m a bit annoyed over the planning for my new anthology of fringe history texts. I had wanted to have the texts on one page and the bibliographic data and the commentary on the text on the facing page, which would allow for easy correlation of the text and the notes, and for a running commentary on each text. But the publisher says that because eBooks don’t do columns, they won’t allow it in print either because it would be too much work to convert the print book to an eBook. Therefore, I have to come up with a new way of presenting material in an understandable way. This will be “fun.” It seems that eBooks are ruining print in ways I hadn’t even imagined!

This week I’ve been proofreading and correcting my translations of various ancient texts in the hope of finalizing my anthology of fringe history’s most-used ancient texts. I’ve found a few minor translation errors, but overall I’m pleasantly surprised that I managed to translate most of the documents correctly the first time through. But to that end, I should note that I have made a few revisions to my translation of the hoax document that claimed Ibn-Farrouk discovered the Canary Islands in 999, mostly to correct minor pronoun and word choice issues.

It’s been a busy week in the world of xenoarchaeology. Let’s see what’s new…
News
Here’s a bit of news: Last year, when I tried to find my most recent book, Jason and the Argonauts, a publishing home, an editor told me she wouldn’t buy my book because she already had one in line for publishing. Amazon now has a listing for it: Classics scholar Helen Lovatt’s In Search of the Argonauts: The Remarkable History of the Golden Fleece (I. B. Tauris, 2015). It covers almost exactly the same material as my book, but Lovatt plans to focus on the three overriding themes of the modern academy: race, gender, and colonialism rather than my focus, on history, myth, and religion. I’m not sure how I feel about this; maybe it will get me some extra publicity. I’m not sure.

News
Slowly but surely, I’m finalizing the draft for my book of ancient texts used by fringe historians. The publisher gave me a word limit of 125,000 words, and I managed to edit the text down to 120,000 words (from 135,000) without losing any major pieces or cutting short the analysis. I think it’s just about ready to call finished.

News
- This was another week in which alleged conspiracies by the Smithsonian remained a popular subject across many genres of fringe history. White supremacists debated whether the Smithsonian was in league with Zionists to suppress America Unearthed and promote the Holocaust, while Richard Dewhurst continued his media tour promoting his new book that alleges the Smithsonian is instead suppressing the truth about Bible giants in service of an atheist agenda. Since David Childress invented the conspiracy claim in 1993, I wonder if he’s happy at the industry of conspiratorial hate he has unleashed.
- I’ve been invited on a podcast to discuss questions of racism and fringe history, scheduled for some time later this summer. I can’t tell you the name of the show until the details are finalized, but it should be an interesting conversation. I’ll let you know once there is an air date.

My grandfather passed away unexpectedly this week, so as a result I fell a bit behind in my progress on my various manuscripts this week. However, I am talking with a website with more than one million monthly visitors about cross-promoting my work on their site, perhaps with an exclusive essay, to help drive new traffic to JasonColavito.com.

- This week saw the return of Ancient Aliens after a three-month hiatus, but as a clip show with “best of” highlights from the first six seasons. My review is linked below.
- I received some constructive feedback on my draft anthology of ancient texts (mis)used by the stars of Ancient Aliens, so I’ve been making final corrections to the manuscript. I tell you, though, that if I knew how much work assembling this collection was going to be, I’d never have taken on the project. It’s become even more complex and complicated than actually writing an original book. No wonder ancient astronaut theorists have never attempted such a project.
