News
- I’ll be honest: I have no idea what has happened with Cthulhu in World Mythology; it was supposed to be indexed and for sale by now, but nothing has happened yet. I will continue to keep you posted as the publisher provides more details.
- I’ve finally finished transcribing Fred W. Lucas’s debunking of the Zeno Narrative—that early modern forgery used as the sole factual basis for the claim that Henry Sinclair reached America. Now all I have to do is plug it into a template, index it, and make a cover. Then you, too, can have your own copy on your shelf of a book that’s been out of print since just fifty (!) “Editions De Luxe” were printed in 1898.

- I’ve added several new pages to my website, including index pages for my reviews of America Unearthed and Ancient Aliens to make it easier to find my reviews. I’ve also added some new material to my Library, including classic articles on fake discoveries and the search for zombies.
- I’ve noticed that an increasing percentage of readers of my website are accessing the site on mobile devices, so I’ve been refreshing some of the graphics for better mobile display. I’ve tweaked some of the headers to remove drop shadows and increase the size of titles so they will show up better on smaller screens.

- I should be receiving a contract for a new book this week, and once I’ve signed it, I’ll give everyone details about my next book. It’s a departure from some of my earlier work, though not too far afield. More to come!
- I promise that this week I am going to do everything I can to get to the bottom of what is going on with Cthulhu in World Mythology. The publisher has not updated me in months, and I am frankly at a loss as to when the book is now supposed to be released.

- I tried to find out what is going on with Cthulhu in World Mythology, but the publisher has not responded to my efforts to contact him. I will keep trying, but I am obviously quite concerned.
- This is a bit off topic, but I want to acknowledge the death this week of John Palmer, a former reporter and anchor for NBC News. When I was named the Jessica Savitch Scholar at Ithaca College in 2001, the honor included a dinner with that year’s special guest speaker, a news personality. When that year’s high-profile speaker couldn’t make it, Palmer stepped in. Due to the last minute switch, the college canceled the dinner, too, and my dinner turned into ten minutes backstage in a room with a vending machine. Palmer was, though, the consummate professional and will be missed.

- The good news is that Atomic Overmind has finally updated me on Cthulhu in World Mythology. The bad news is that the project is still delayed, and I do not yet have a firm release date.
- I had hoped to be able to announce my newest book contract today, but the editor at that publisher went on vacation immediately after accepting my book proposal and has only just now returned and mailed out the contract.
- A third editor who asked for additional materials on yet another book to be forwarded to him immediately because he was so interested in the project tells my agent that he hasn’t had time to look at them after six weeks.
And they wonder why print is dying.

- If you did not see my blog post this week, I will be publishing a new book with McFarland Publishers next year tentatively titled Jason and the Argonauts: The Epic History of a Greek Myth. The book will examine the Argonaut myth in its mythic, historical, and archaeological contexts and offer a new view on the “real” Golden Fleece.
- If you’ve been following the saga of the Sinclair family and their efforts to trace their ancestry back to Jesus, you’ll probably get a kick out of this blog post in which the various Sinclair advocates begin feuding among themselves over who gets to control our understanding of the Sinclair bloodline, and which myths (Henry Sinclair, Jesus Bloodline, etc.) they should accept. While the author makes several mistakes (you can’t copyright an idea, for example), it’s a weird, interesting look into the minds of the Sinclair obsessed.

I’ve spent this week hard at work finalizing the manuscript and illustrations for Jason and the Argonauts, my new book, which is due at the publisher October 1. I’m almost all of the way through, and it’s coming together well. I discovered that the National Gallery of Art has some great early modern images of Jason that will be a great help in illustrating some of the more obscure points about fifteenth through seventeenth century interpretations of Jason—and the NGA gives away print-ready scans of the art for free! (It’s one of the great things about U.S. government resources: They’re available for free or nominal fees to U.S. citizens since, technically, we own them.)

- My manuscript for Jason and the Argonauts is due at the publisher in just over a week, so I’m busy putting the finishing touches on the book. As a result, I haven’t had a lot of new adventures this week.
- One of the weirdest things to happen is that I contacted one of the leading experts on a particular ancient culture, who wrote four books on the subject, including one published just last year. I asked him if he could clarify his source for a claim in one of his books so I could fact check my own book, and he told me that he doesn’t know and has “moved away” from that ancient culture so he doesn’t think much about it anymore. Fun!

- After much work and a few delays, I finally packed up and sent off the manuscript for Jason and the Argonauts to the publisher this week. It feels good to have the weight lifted off of me, but on the other hand it’s also a bit sad to know that the longest, most complex project I’ve yet undertaken is over.
- Now that it’s finished, I can pick up again where I left off on my other projects. First up, I plan to finish my reprint of Fred W. Lucas’s debunking of the Zeno Narrative, the basis for the Henry Sinclair American voyage claims. I hope to have that done in a week or so.

It’s been a busy week in the world of xenoarchaeology. Let’s see what’s new…
News
- So, Atomic Overmind tells me that Cthulhu in World Mythology should finally (actually and for truly) be on sale sometime in the next couple of weeks. I hope this time it’s true, and come hell or high water, it’s going to be available for the Christmas gift-giving season.
- McFarland tells me that they would like to change the title of my Jason and the Argonauts book. The new title is going to be Jason and the Argonauts through the Ages. It seems a bit long to me.

McFarland informs me that the final title for my Jason and the Argonauts book will be Jason and the Argonauts through the Ages. I should have a preliminary cover design in the next few weeks.

This week I’ve been toying with the idea of putting together my various writings on zombies and turning them into a short eBook on the history of zombies. It turns out that I’ve written nearly 10,000 words on zombies, and that seems like a good length for a short eBook. Depending on how it turns out, I may use it as a précis for a future full-length book on the mythic and cultural origins of zombies.

- America Unearthed returned after a lengthy hiatus, and I’m sure all of you are anxious to get directly to my review of the first episode.
- I released an eBook mini called A Brief History of Zombies with a 10,000-word discussion of the origins of the horror monster. The book contains the text of many of my blog posts on zombies, woven together with new material.

I’ve made some progress interesting a publisher in an anthology of the “ancient texts” that ancient astronaut and fringe history writers use to support their strange ideas. The publisher is also interested in commissioning a full-length book about cable TV’s pseudo-history shows, though I’m not sure I want to devote that much more time to writing about them!

Unsurprisingly, as we approach the holiday season, it’s been a bit slow on the publishing front. Atomic Overmind missed yet another deadline for Cthulhu in World Mythology, and I have no idea when they are going to get the book out. I will keep you updated, and I’ll send out a notice if by some Christmas miracle it happens in the next week.

- Since it’s Christmas, won’t you consider buying a book? While it’s too late to have them shipped, most are also available as eBooks for instant Christmas satisfaction. After all, if you celebrate the holiday, you have to do something with that Amazon gift card you got in your stocking.
- With the oncoming Christmas and New Year holidays, I’ll be taking things a little easier. This will be the last newsletter for 2013. The newsletter will return in January. In the meantime, I’ll be continuing to update my blog throughout the holiday season, especially since H2 seems determined to burn off all of America Unearthed in one chunk, running episodes right through the holidays and beyond.
