It’s been a busy week in the world of xenoarchaeology. Let’s see what’s new…
News
This was one of the stranger weeks in fringe history. Between Scott Wolter’s claim last Saturday that he knows people who have samples of Jesus’ DNA and that the Sinclair family claimed America in the name of Venus, and the announcement of a musical based on Scott Wolter’s work, we had more than enough America Unearthed news to last the rest of the summer. But when I learned that fringe writer Greg Little attacked me for doubting the existence of a lost race of giants, things just got weird—especially when fans of Little started writing to me demanding to know why my “bias” prevents me from believing whatever has been committed to print, such as old newspaper stories about “giants.”

It’s been a busy week in the world of xenoarchaeology. Let’s see what’s new…
News
This week started off well. I attended Paul McCartney’s Albany concert last Saturday, and it was an amazing experience. It was my first time seeing him live, and it was also McCartney’s first show after recovering from the illness that forced him to cancel his first American tour dates. Then the Huffington Post ran a piece criticizing me, and that was less fun. By the end of the week, Scott Wolter had saved the week by asserting that Christians are out to get him for daring to speak the “truth” about the Jesus Bloodline.

- This week I spoke with a Minnesota Public Radio producer about the Kensington Rune Stone. The program, however, will not air on MPR but rather on a local station as part of an examination of the ways believers have integrated the stone into their belief systems. I’ll keep you updated on when or if the program airs. It’s in preproduction for a fall airing.
- This week I also sent off the manuscript for my anthology of ancient texts used by fringe historians. The project is finally done! I am incredibly relieved because it took much more work and far more time than I anticipated to get it right. It should be out sometime this fall, probably around November—just in time for Christmas shopping! I’ll keep you posted.

My publisher, McFarland, received my manuscript for my anthology of ancient texts this week, and the good news is that it’s ready to go to the editing and design stage. The bad news is that the illustrations specialist informed me that three images from the Library of Congress are “too blurry,” so I’ve had to scramble to replace them. One of them was the famous map of the empire of Atlantis from Ignatius Donnelly’s Atlantis: The Antediluvian World. Fortunately, I own a vintage copy of the book and could scan a new copy of the map, though it’s hard to do from a bound text. The production part of being an author is much less fun than the writing.

- This week I managed to upset Bruce Fenton, self-described paranormal expert, by quoting him verbatim, which he considers an unfair attack. Fenton believes he is the reincarnation of a space alien who fought against a Reptilian ambush deep in prehistory. He’s also being paid by the Science Channel to serve as an expert in ancient mysteries on an expedition to find giants.
- For the rest of the week, I spent my time fighting with a major computer manufacturer to get a faulty computer repaired. It took up more time than I expected.
- I also started work on a new YouTube video, which I think will be pretty good. I laid down the voice track, mixed in the music, and started building the visuals. But it takes forever to build visuals when the standard is 2 seconds per shot. That means that the seven-minute video will have approximately 210 different shots. That’s a lot of editing!

I know it’s not fair to tease my readers, but I am weak and can’t resist. This week I received a super-secret preview of an academic paper that offers a startling new discovery about a well-known fringe history artifact. I wish I could say more, but because it has not yet been submitted for publication, I can’t say anything more. But rest assured, as soon as it is published, I will be the first to report on it! You’ll just have to speculate until then. Sadly, due to the speed of academic publishing, it could be a long wait.

- This week I shot an episode of Codes & Conspiracies focusing on the ancient astronaut theory. The episode is scheduled to air sometime this winter, probably between November and January. I will keep you posted when I have a firm air date.
- When I returned from the shoot, I learned that America Unearthed host Scott Wolter had taken to his blog to threaten me with imaginary legal action for potential “future events” that haven’t happened yet. We’ll see how that goes. Time traveling legal threats confuse me. I might already have been angry tomorrow, but I guess only “future events” will let me know for sure.

- I have to admit, it was a bit unusual to have America Unearthed host Scott Wolter attacking me online for having an “unbalanced” life. That one is sure to go into my personal scrap book alongside Giorgio Tsoukalos’s long-ago claim that I had “malevolent intentions.” Fortunately, it was otherwise just your standard week of Oreo cookie conspiracies, elongated skulls, and other familiar fringe history topics.
- I just learned this weekend that famed TV producer Alan Landsburg, the creator of Biography and In Search Of… died last month at the age of 81. Landsburg, more than any other single person, is responsible for the popularity of the ancient astronaut theory thanks to a series of 1970s documentaries he produced for NBC based on Chariots of the Gods, including In Search of Ancient Astronauts and The Outer Space Connection. Hosted by Rod Serling, these programs were watched by more than a third of all TV viewers and remain the most-watched ancient astronaut programs of all time. They were the model for Ancient Aliens, which was also originally adapted from Chariots of the Gods.

The interesting news this week was that novelist and fringe history buff David Brody based a character in his new novel on me. Brody claims that the figure is a composite, but the similarities—ranging from Italian-American ethnicity to Latin fluency to running a blog reviewing fringe history documentaries—are too close to be anything but intentional. Naturally the character is a villain who “smells” and who triggers the novel’s plot by posting a blog entry revealing negative personal information about the book’s Scott Wolter stand-in hero.

It’s been a busy week in the world of xenoarchaeology. Let’s see what’s new…
News
A+E Networks, the parent of History and H2, revoked my press credentials and locked me out of their press website this weekend, only days before the launch of their new lineup of pseudo-history programs. The revocation occurred just after I published an early review of Brad Meltzer’s Lost History based on an A+E Networks screener. Assuming this was purposeful, I can’t imagine what they thought it would accomplish.

This week saw the return of Ancient Aliens in anticipation of next week’s full-on sweeps month fringe history bonanza. I can’t say I’m exactly looking forward to it, but in honor of the upcoming series Search for the Lost Giants (premiering Tuesday), I’ve created a special section of my website devoted to material on the alleged discovery of prehistoric skeletons of giant humans. It has some interesting material, so be sure to check it out.

This was a big week for fringe history on television, with the return of Curse of Oak Island, the launch of Search for the Lost Giants, a new episode of Ancient Aliens, and the season premiere of America Unearthed. It’s all too much, really, and I’m going to have to make some decisions about which abuses of history I am going to subject myself to each week. There is a limit to how much I can take!

- I’d like to offer a special welcome to my new Turkish readers! Earlier this week, Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdogan claimed that Islamic sailors discovered Cuba in 1178 because of a passage in Columbus’s journal suggesting he found a mosque in Cuba. I wrote about this back in 2013, and my article is attracting attention in Turkey this week as a result of Erdogan’s recent claims.
- On the other hand, I was rejected from another television gig this week when Left/Right Productions admitted that they had not researched me and discovered that it was perhaps not the best idea to hire me for a show they want to pitch to the H2 network.

- This week I was scheduled to have conversations with two television producers, but only one of them called. Our conversation was off the record, so I can’t report on exactly what was said. The long and short of it, though, is that he wasn’t interested in me for an on camera role.
- In happier news, I’ve completed the majority of the upgrades to my website’s graphic design. Most of the main tabs and the home page now have shiny new graphics.

Reviewing three TV shows a week is a massive amount of work, so I’m glad that this coming week Ancient Aliens is taking Friday off. I’m trying to decide whether there is a show I can drop from my rotation. If there were going to be one, it’s probably going to be Ancient Aliens since the program is running so much on fumes that it’s recycling its own recycling now.

My publishers at McFarland have released the final title, cover design, and promotional text for my anthology of fringe history’s favorite ancient texts, Foundations of Atlantis, Ancient Astronauts and Other Alternative Pasts. The book is with the publisher and should be released sometime in the spring—I’d estimate around March or April.
