It’s been a (not so) busy week in the world of xenoarchaeology. Let’s see what’s new…
News
With the summer vacation season in full swing, and the Independence Day and Canada Day holidays upon us, it was slower than usual around the wacky world of fringe history. One of the weirder things that happened was an attempt to rehabilitate the National Enquirer tabloid story that Richard Nixon showed comedian Jackie Gleason a hangar full of alien bodies. The Daily Grail promoted the linked article as “new” confirmation, but UFO micro-celebrity Larry Warren has been telling the same story for many years now, and it was debunked (again) in 2013.

News
Not much! It’s been a rather quiet week as many of fringe history’s biggest names are either on summer vacation or using the summer months to go on tour to make some quick cash. As a result, there was surprisingly little new material published or discussed this week, though if you’re into more recent historical misdirection, the uproar this week over the display of Confederate symbols had some interesting parallels to the ignorance of fringe historians on other subjects. Cherry-picking evidence isn’t just for pyramids!

This week America Unearthed host Scott Wolter informed us that his new History channel series will debut sometime in the next month or so. More importantly, the academic journal American Antiquity has a special section devoted to pseudo-archaeology, with a couple of recommendations of my work!

News
This week Ancient Aliens returned from a three month hiatus, and its new season is just as bad as everything that came before, with even more recycling of old content, but this time with a new, slower pace to keep them from burning through ideas so fast. On the other hand, it gives viewers more time to realize how threadbare the logic is while they lather, rinse, and repeat yet again.

I’m happy to announce that I have just released a paperback of my edition of Murtada ibn al-‘Afif’s Prodigies of Egypt as translated by John Davies in 1672. This classic treasury of medieval lore about the pyramids, the Flood, and other antediluvian happenings is available right now for just $9.99. I’ll try to have an eBook to follow, but formatting eBooks is a huge pain in the neck and not a lot of fun. It will have to depend on how much time I have!

As summer starts to wind down, there’s relatively little crazy stuff going on as the media prepares for the launch of the fall season. Fortunately, in the lull Scott Wolter decided to announce the discovery of an alleged Hooked X® on the so-called Jesus Ossuary, providing grist for the mill as well as confirmation that his star is dimming, since he announced the “discovery” on a low-traffic blog instead of on TV or in a book or even Ancient American magazine.

News
This week I finally finished my summer project of translating into English the Akhbār al-zamān, the medieval text containing some of the oldest surviving lore about the Giza pyramids in the time before the Flood. As such, it is the closest we can come to the ultimate source of many of fringe history’s crazy claims about lost civilizations, secret pyramid codes, lost Egyptian technology, and other standard features of authors ranging from Erich von Däniken to Graham Hancock. I didn’t think I’d actually manage to pull it off, since it’s the longest thing I’ve ever translated by a factor of 10. It still needs to be revised and corrected, but that’s a project for another day.

News
This week the History Channel condemned its latest fringe history series to an ignominious end. Pirate Treasure of the Knights Templar died as it lived, wrong to the end, unwatched, and unloved. But it did it at an earlier hour, kicked out of prime time due to extremely low ratings. Perhaps this means we’ll start to see a shift away from crazy history TV. But at the same time, the network advertised both Ancient Aliens and a new show about “real” stories behind mythology, so we may be in for more crazy to come.

This week wealthy venture capitalist Jacques Vallée announced that he is asking his fans to give him and coauthor Chris Aubeck $42,000 to publish a revised “collector’s edition” of Wonders in the Sky (2009), the book I had heavily criticized for being inaccurate. Aubeck told me that he used my research in revising the book, and I have apparently served as their free research assistant while they collect the cash! I have half a mind to put together an eBook called Blunders in the Sky chronicling their many errors in the original version to release when the new book is due next spring.

Did you know that “gigantologists” Jim Vieira and Hugh Newman have a new book out on the hunt for giants called Giants on Record? It gets better: The book was apparently self-published through the website Newman works for, Avalon Rising. Does this mean that the days when being the host of a TV show guaranteed a lucrative book deal are finally over?

It’s hard to believe that it’s been 10 years since my first book, The Cult of Aliens Gods, was published, and the time has gone by very fast. While I have some mixed feelings about the way the publisher treated me, I remain proud of the fact that the book became highly influential, cited in popular nonfiction, scholarly dissertations, and even influencing cable TV presentations of the ancient astronaut theory. Not bad for something I wrote when I was just 22 and published at 24.

It was certainly an unusual week for pseudohistory. This week presidential political and crazy claims about the pyramids mixed together when GOP frontrunner Ben Carson claimed that Joseph built the pyramids as granaries, a claim that was most popular in the Middle Ages. It must frost Graham Hancock that the American release of his Magicians of the Gods is being upstaged by an even less supportable view of ancient history!

News
Graham Hancock’s Magicians of the Gods was released in the United States this week, more than a month after its U.K. release, and… silence. The media here in the U.S. virtually ignored the book, and Hancock received here in America barely any notice. I wasn’t able to find an American review in a major newspaper or magazine. It must be a terrible disappointment for him, though likely attributable more to the virtual elimination of book coverage in the American media than to a rejection of his pseudoscience.

I’m not sure what was the most disturbing revelation this week: that Alan Butler and Janet Wolter think that 9/11 was an occult anti-Masonic conspiracy, that the History Channel is targeting children with a kid’s guide to the ancient astronaut theory, or that everyone who discussed the lost civilization on the Joe Rogan Experience this week (Rogan, Graham Hancock, and Randall Carlson) admitted that drug use was a profound influence on their ideas about ancient history.

Due to the Thanksgiving holiday and Black Friday buying orgy this week, there was relatively little fringe history news. I took the opportunity this week to review a new book on giants from the History Channel’s Search for the Lost Giants team, which was just as bad as I feared I would be.

News
This week Expedition Unknown on the Travel Channel devoted an episode to the mysteries of Christopher Columbus, and it was refreshing to see a program that did not engage in endless conspiracy-mongering about Templars or space aliens. While the show did tend to gloss over the less savory aspects of Columbus’ legacy (particularly his treatment of Native peoples) and did offer a conspiracy theory about Columbus purposely scuttling the Santa Maria to justify a return trip to Hispaniola, overall it was one of the rare “historical mysteries” adventure hours that didn’t stray into paranoid tinfoil hat territory.
