News
- Happy New Year to everyone! I hope you’re ready for another year of unusual claims about ancient history as cable TV and the publishing industry ready a record number of fringe series and books to capitalize on the recent success of Curse of Oak Island. I know I can’t wait!
- As you can see, the newsletter has a fresh, new look for the New Year. I’ve updated the graphics to match my website’s recent design upgrade. I hope you like the new look.
- I hope you have been following my blog over the holidays. In the past couple of weeks, I had a dust up with America Unearthed host Scott Wolter that played out over our respective blogs.

It was a bit of a disappointing week for me because I had expected that the episode of Codes and Conspiracies I shot last fall would have aired with the return of original episodes to the American Heroes Channel. There is no word yet on when Codes and Conspiracies will start its second season, but I plan to keep you updated.

This week I received the page proofs for my new anthology of fringe history’s most commonly cited ancient texts, Foundations of Atlantis, Ancient Astronauts and Other Alternative Histories. This means that the book is slowly winding its way to publication! If everything stays on schedule, the book should be available sometime this spring. News
This week I’ve been working on indexing and correcting the page proofs for Foundations of Atlantis, Ancient Astronauts and Other Alternative Histories. It’s going a bit slower than I anticipated because the text is so dense and there are just so many names to index! It is the absolute worst part of writing a book, and I would be happy if I never had to index a book again.

News
Can you believe the thirteen weeks of this season of America Unearthed have already passed? It’s been a long slog, but now it’s time to say goodbye (possibly for the last time, since the show has yet to be renewed). I’m trying to decide what to review next. H2 is offering up some terrible-looking shows like its new show about treasure hunting in the Superstition Mountains of Arizona and the return of Hangar 1, which last year fabricated evidence. Oh, what to choose! Maybe none of the above.

I had some interesting news this weekend. A few months ago a producer working on a documentary for the BBC contacted me about discussing the Argonauts myth on BBC Radio Three, but nothing came of this. It turns out that the project was put on hold for a few months but is now back on. The producer and I are currently working on scheduling time for an interview.

This week I had a nice chat with a British author working on a book about Hollywood and flying saucers. We discussed ancient astronauts in fact and fiction, and he plans to include some of what I said in his forthcoming book. I won’t discuss any more about the project until it is released, but when the book is published this fall, sections of our conversation will likely be available online as promotional material for the book. I’ll share the author, title, and synopsis when the project is published.

- The American Heroes Channel announced this week that the episode on Codes and Conspiracies on which I am set to appear to discuss ancient astronauts will air next Monday, March 2, at 10 PM ET. If you don’t get the American Heroes Channel, select episodes are available shortly after air on their website, and I hope this one will be as well.
- I also did an interview with BBC Radio Three this week for an upcoming documentary on the Caucasus Mountains in the Western imagination. I’ll share an air time for my British readers when the program goes to air sometime later this year.

This week we saw the fringe history world explode over a years-old photograph comparing one of Father Crespi’s hoax artifacts to the Egyptian image that inspired it. I was shocked to learn that there wasn’t a webpage with factual information about Crespi’s fake gold and silver objects, so I put one up. I also, more happily, found a fascinating account of an 1827 investigation into a “giant” skeleton in Bolivia that ended just the way I would have assumed: with the revelation that the bones were in fact those of a mastodon. It’s a fun read!

This week I learned that the History channel is moving Ancient Aliens back to the main History channel from H2 next week in order to capitalize on the show’s loyal audience of 1.5 million or more weekly viewers. If you’ve seen the obscenely awful new promo that the network has been running, you’ll agree that History sees the show now as a star vehicle for living meme Giorgio Tsoukalos. The entirety of the promotion is a slow zoom out of Tsoukalos’s hair from the molecular level outward. I imagine that’s a concession by History’s new programming chief that content is no longer king. They should just go full Kardashian and give Tsoukalos and the other ancient astronaut theorists a reality show where they attempt to interact with other humans in a halfway normal way.

Ancient Aliens returned to the History channel this week with a sad, silly episode that represented perhaps the worst commemoration of the sesquicentennial of the Civil War’s conclusion on all of cable television. But that wasn’t all. The producer for the Graelian Report radio show and podcast has officially invited me on to discuss skepticism’s role in the paranormal. I’m trying to see if I can if it into my schedule. Most of these shows air or record at night, and since I’m up at 6 AM for work, it can be a bit of a challenge to find any energy in the evening. I’ll see what I can do.

I told the producer of the Graelian Report that I’d be happy to appear on the show, but as of press time today, I have yet to hear back. I tried! I’ve also received some additional offers for podcast appearances, and I’m trying to see whether I can fit them into my schedule. One of the challenges, of course, is that podcasts don’t pay for my time, and the conversion rate of audience members into paying customers for my books is very low. As a result, my appearance on a podcast gives the host free content that he or she can monetize through advertisements, subscription fees, etc., but gives me pretty much nothing. As a result, taking time off work or staying up into the middle of the night to do their shows is a rather unattractive proposition.

- Still no word from the Graelian Report about me appearing on their show. I tried! Perhaps they didn’t think I’d actually say yes?
- This week I managed to upset both World War II revisionist Veronica Clark and fringe writer Nick Redfern, which must be some sort of record even for me in terms of the sheer range of people who don’t like being criticized. Redfern visited my blog to make his displeasure known in vulgar terms, while Clark produced (as of this writing) more than 23 minutes of YouTube videos expressing her anger and outrage. They can get in line behind Scott Wolter, Giorgio Tsoukalos, John Anthony West, David Childress, Jason Martell, and about a dozen others.

News
The big news from the world of fringe history this week was the loss of one their most important television outlets, the H2 network, which will be converted to the new Vice cable channel by the beginning of next year. A+E Networks, the parent of H2, has moved some of the channel’s programming to the History Channel, including Ancient Aliens and Hangar 1: The UFO Files, but there is no word on whether History will give America Unearthed a lifeline or let it vanish along with its home network. However, this isn’t exactly a huge win for reason on TV since there are still a dozen fringe channels, and even Survivorman went searching for a Nephilim-Bigfoot connection this week!

This week I ended up in a tiff with the owners of Ancient Origins, a fringe history website, after a reader directed me to their “About Us” link and I noticed that the owners of the site were listed under different names on the page of the site’s parent company. Even though this information was publicly available on their own websites, the owners of the site accused me of violating their privacy and their copyrights by discussing it. This stretched into several lengthy emails that saw them accuse me of lacking integrity and not caring for the truth. Nothing I said in the blog post I wrote about Ancient Origins was untrue, but to protect their privacy, I edited the post to remove some identifying details.

This week Ancient Aliens offered up a new set of special edition episodes called “Ultimate Evidence,” which promised to provide the most “conclusive” evidence ever of an alien influence in the human past. In the grand tradition of P. T. Barnum’s exhibition of the fabulous Egress, this bait-and-switch promotion turned out to be a rerun spiced up with interpolated sections of last year’s In Search of Aliens series. It seems that they already proved aliens visited earth, and somehow we missed it!

- This past week we saw the dedication of a monument to the Knights Templar in Westford, Massachusetts, allegedly in honor of their imaginary colonization of America in the fourteenth century. When we remember that there is a plaque commemorating the Betty and Barney Hill alien abduction up in New Hampshire, it really makes you wonder how fictitious a story has to be before somebody stops to think, “That’s not true.”
