It’s been a busy few weeks in the world of xenoarchaeology. Let’s see what’s new…
News
Happy New Year! As we get ready to start a new year of misusing and abusing history for political and financial ends, I invite you to close out the waning hours of 2017 by taking a look back at the past twelve months in fringe history with my year in review. When you see everything all together, it really drives home some of the overarching themes of the year. I was surprised at how many times some of the same few themes, including the close ties between fringe theories and politics as well as Russian involvement in promoting ancient astronauts, kept coming to the fore. It doesn’t bode well for 2018.

News
This week the Southern Poverty Law Center ran a major article on the use of fringe history and pseudoscience among racist hate groups, and I was quoted as an expert on the subject. The piece dovetails nicely with the article I am currently writing for a British magazine on the anti-Semitic themes underlying conspiracy theories about the Rothschild banking family. I was glad to see that the SPLC article has gotten a great deal of play on social media and is spreading the message about the dark side of pseudohistory to a broader audience.

This week saw two different claims about what can be found inside the newly discovered void in the Great Pyramid. While scientific evidence suggests that the chamber is empty, Scott Creighton claimed, based on medieval legends, that it was filled with antediluvian corpses (linked below), while an Italian scientist claimed that the Pyramid Texts told him it held a throne made of meteoric iron. It’s rather odd that both argue that the contents of the void can be determined by texts written down long after the pyramid was built.

News
OK, so I lied: It was actually a very slow and boring week in the world of fringe history, and the biggest news of the week was the fact that The Curse of Oak Island hit new highs, becoming the most-watched cable show on Tuesdays. For an old series with a proven track record of providing little payoff, it is an astonishing feat, all the more so since its success rests on a tidal wave of “gray” viewers, since two-thirds of the show’s audience are over the age of 50, making it one of the grayest major cable broadcasts, behind only the cable news channels and HGTV.

This week Gaia TV asked me to fly out to an undisclosed location to record an interview for a show on ancient astronauts, for free. While I have no intention of helping them promote ancient astronautics, it is also depressing to know that they are launching even more ancient astronaut themes subscription programming, suggesting that the audience for these sorts of claims is large enough to support an entire subscription video network—Netflix for Ancient Aliens junkies. But it was also the week in which the parent company of fringe writer Andrew Collins’s publisher posted a pre-publication draft of his new book, The Cygnus Key, to the internet for critics to review four months before its publication date. I won’t complain about their odd marketing strategy so long as I get to pre-debunk their titles before they are even released.

This week Nephilim theorist L. A. Marzulli and Ancient Aliens talking head Brien Foerster promoted a conference in which they would reveal the results of DNA tests on elongated skulls from Paracas, Peru. They managed to bungle the whole thing. Their pay-per-view live stream experienced technical failure, but the results were also underwhelming: Marzulli tweeted that today they would stream a video of the presentation that repeats his 2016 claim that elongated skulls contain DNA from the “Middle East,” and thus are consistent with Bible Giants riding the Flood waves to Peru. It’s what’s known as motivated reasoning.

This week, I had a brush with TV stardom, only to see is all fall away. OK, well, not quite. I didn’t seriously figure that History’s In Search Of revival would actually go through with casting me as a talking head once the network realized whom the producers were planning to use. After all, History threatened to sue me a few years ago, and I can’t imagine they would forget about that. But it was still a little disappointing that I wasn’t able to agree to the production’s travel demands to shoot a very brief interview for the Zachary Quinto-helmed program, if only for the nostalgia factor of being a part of a series I watched and loved as a child.

This week alternative history writer Graham Hancock announced the title of his new book, which is to be called America Before. The book, which will attempt to shoehorn American prehistory into his narrative of a lost Atlantis-like civilization, will be delivered to his publisher in June for a fall or winter release. Based on the material Hancock has posted online over the past year, I can’t say I’m looking forward to a toxic stew of failed claims about flash-frozen mammoths, lost white tribes, and other discredited attempts to rewrite North American history into something it is not.

This was certainly a busy week for me, anyway. After Nephilim theorist L. A. Marzulli called me a “weasel” on the radio and used intemperate language to outline my perceived shortcomings, I shot back at him on Twitter, and the result was Marzulli offering to speak with me via Skype to attempt to resolve my concerns about his DNA research on the Paracas elongated skulls. I’m not sure he really expected that I would approach the subject seriously rather than ideologically, but we ended up having an interesting conversation, though not one that resolved many questions. Still, to give credit where it is due: This is more than Erich von Däniken (who refused to speak with me), Giorgio Tsoukalos (who demanded TV producers not let me in the same building as him), or David Childress (who used to badmouth me to magazines) ever did. The only other fringe figures who tried this are the Two Who Must Not Be Named, but who threatened more than once to sue me.

This week Nephilim theorist L. A. Marzulli released a DVD and book detailing the research he and his team conducted on the elongated skulls of Paracas, Peru, and paired the release with a free bonus DVD of the extraction of a so-called “alien” implant from an alleged abductee’s arm. In anticipation of this release, and to market the DVD and book combo, Marzulli played host to Rick Woodward, his team anthropologist, to discuss the Paracas skulls. It was a strange conversation, and as I discovered this week, one that has more than a few areas where the team seemed to be out of their depth.

While Corbyn condemned anti-Semitism and said he had made only a few posts, the scandal only served to reinforce the reality of the connection between anti-Jewish ranting and Icke’s sub rosa anti-Semitism, disguised as paranoia about Reptilians.

This week, Russian president Vladimir Putin suggested that “Jews” might have been responsible for the election interference that U.S. intelligence agencies say Russia committed. While this comment seemed bizarre, it’s a part of a longstanding Russian effort to stoke anti-Jewish conspiracies. Kremlin-linked Russian television recently ran a pseudo-documentary that made anti-Jewish claims about a global Jewish banking conspiracy, and the Russians have provided propaganda with anti-Semitic themes to pseudo-historians like David Wilcock of Ancient Aliens in order use such claims to deflect blame from Russian actions. It’s depressing to see these different threads coming together in such dark ways.

This week former Sen. Harry Reid (D-Nev.) discussed his involvement with Robert Bigelow and the hunt for UFOs. It was a depressing interview with New York magazine in which the former Senate majority leader explained that he was completely ignorant of math and science before Bigelow and Bigelow’s UFO buddies filled his head with UFO propaganda, eventually resulting in changes to government policy. If that weren’t an argument for legislators having basic general education competencies, I don’t know what would be. If UFO fanatics can exploit a senator’s ignorance so easily, what does that mean when lobbyists and foreign agents with darker designs apply the same playbook?

Happy Easter, and happy April Fool’s Day! This week, a journalist from a national online publication contacted me for an interview for an upcoming article on Tom DeLonge’s company, To the Stars Academy. I’ll be speaking with her next week, and I will keep you posted. In the meantime, DeLonge announced that his company has begun work on his first movie and that the company acquired the rights to a super-laser for launching satellites into orbit from Hal Puthoff, a former OT-VII Scientologist turned psychic researcher. Puthoff has been involved in paranormal research and ufology for decades and was one of the influences behind Robert Bigelow’s involvement. Bigelow’s influence created the Pentagon UFO tracking bureau that brought DeLonge’s company to prominence when it poached the Pentagon’s chief UFO tracker.

It’s been a busy week in the world of xenoarchaeology. Let’s see what’s new…
News

This week I spoke with a reporter from a national online magazine, and she interviewed me about UFOs, conspiracy theories, and Tom DeLonge for an exposé the site is planning about DeLonge’s To the Stars Academy of Arts and Science. I provided a few potential directions for future research, and it sounds like it will be an interesting read when the piece is published in the coming months. However, the research stage is only partway through, so it will likely be some time before the article, and my contribution to it, see print.

This weekend we learned that Art Bell, the first host of Coast to Coast A.M. passed away. Bell was for many years a promoter of the many and varied forms of paranormal and fringe beliefs, including everything from UFOs and ancient aliens to Bigfoot and psychic powers. At the height of his popularity, he spoke to 15 million nightly listeners. After Bell turned over the show to George Noory fifteen years ago, he became increasingly disenchanted with the direction that Noory had taken the show, which now is a nexus for some of the darkest impulses of the fringe. “I wish my name was no longer associated with what Coast has become!” Bell posted to Facebook in 2012. Don’t we all.

OK, so it wasn’t actually much of a busy week. Most of the ancient astronaut theorists were quiet this week in anticipation of the debut of the new season of Ancient Aliens this coming Friday. Graham Hancock is busy writing his now alternative history of North America, and the alt-right descended into infighting and chaos, so they didn’t have too much time to celebrate the Smithsonian Channel’s airing of a controversial Canadian documentary this week alleging that Europeans discovered America 20,000 years ago. We live in strange times when sentences like that are now normal parts of everyday conversation.

I’m writing my book about the Mound Builder myth and its impact on Native Americans, but I keep getting stymied by the fact that almost every secondary source is wrong. Even PBS quoted U.S. Sen. Henry L. Dawes, the author of the Dawes Act, as saying in support of the Act that Natives needed to be civilized and to “wear civilized clothes...cultivate the ground, live in houses, ride in Studebaker wagons, send children to school, drink whiskey [and] own property.” Hundreds of books quote this, but I couldn’t find any evidence that he ever said it. Instead, it’s a line from the suffragette Anna Laurens Dawes, his daughter, in the magazine Christian Work (January 2, 1896), describing the effect of her father’s policies. It’s a pain in the ass that so many quotes turn out to be misunderstood, mangled copying repeated uncritically for a century or more.

This week a reporter from a major U.S. publication—one of the largest in the country—interviewed me for a feature that will be published later this summer about the continued popularity of pseudohistory in popular culture. I can’t share specific details of what the article will cover, but I was pleased that the journalist involved was open to hearing about the dark side of pseudohistory and its historical relationship to racist, colonialist, and imperialist narratives. I’m considering an experiment just to see what would happen. So far, the book I’ve mostly written about the U.S. government’s involvement with the myth of a lost white race of Mound Builders has received praise from publishers and literary agents alike, but to a man they have told me that they would never publish such a book because no one would buy it. What do you think would happen if I sent them a proposal for a book promising to reveal the true secret of the pyramids and expose the forbidden thread that connects fallen angels, Atlantis, and space aliens? I suspect it would receive more favorable readings, and if it weren’t so much work to do it, I’d love to see what would happen when they read to the end and discover that the forbidden truth is that people are too damn bigoted and lazy to accept that certain groups of people make up stories for self-interested purposes and then others copy them for two or three thousand years.

The upshot, however, is that I will need to take some time off to write the piece since the deadline will be rather short. Details will follow when I’ve figured out what I’m doing and have finalized the details.

After six long, dull weeks, Ancient Aliens went on hiatus until July 20, but it’s not going away. Next month is Alien Con, the official Ancient Aliens fan convention. This year David Duchovny of The X-Files will be slumming it alongside Giorgio Tsoukalos, further evidence that the ancient astronaut theory is melding seamlessly into science fiction as part of a 360-degree lifestyle brand.

- This was a strange week in which I spent half the time discussing the mysteries of consciousness and spirituality, and the other half unraveling the decidedly earthier mystery of so-called alien alloys. The common bond, however, is that all of these mysteries are being used as fodder for commercial ventures from the stars of television, publishing, and new media. The other common bond is that the grand claims for angels and aliens have much less to them than meets the eye.
