New York Times' UFO Coverage Still Just a Front for To the Stars and History Channel

5/28/2019

Later today, America Unearthed returns, and I know you are all waiting with baited breath for the Travel Channel to relaunch the controversial ex-H2 show. In fact, the only people who don’t seem excited are those at the Travel Channel, which are dumping the show with no publicity and no fanfare. Megan Fox got New York Times and major magazine writeups for her crappy fringe history show, and America Unearthed just barely got a line in the nightly TV listing highlights. Ironically, it the show will air opposite CBS’s archaeology-themed summer drama Blood & Treasure. Both shows lie outrageously about history, feature bearded dudes who dress like Indiana Jones, and imagine elaborate conspiracy theories about dangerous secrets in the ancient past. Calling one “fiction” and the other “reality” is at this point a distinction without a difference.
My plan is to review the program as it airs, publishing a review on my blog a few minutes after it ends at 11 PM ET. This will be a bit challenging, however, since it used to air at 9 PM, and now that I have a toddler, making it to 11 PM is a lot harder than it used to be. Given that the Travel Channel’s average audience is only about half the size of the one that watched America Unearthed in its first incarnation, my guess is that I shouldn’t really push myself too hard since we aren’t likely to see blockbuster ratings.

While we wait, however, I do want to point out something Paul Seaburn wrote on Mysterious Universe. He noted that the New York Times published another article about military UFOs this week and then said this:
This coverage by The New York Times truly lets the UFO cat out of the secrecy bag. It’s only a matter of time before other whistleblowers come forth in this age of whistleblowers coming forth.

This is big.
It is not big.

The article in question reported on the experiences of Lt. Ryan Graves and Lt. Danny Accoin, who claimed to have seen UFOs. The piece was partly written by Richard Blumenthal and Leslie Kean, who continue to avoid disclosing to their readers their close connection to ufology. Kean, as you will recall, is a professional disclosure advocate who founded a UFO disclosure organization. The authors are closely connected to Tom DeLonge’s To the Stars Academy of Arts and Science, whose interests they have chosen to promote in the Times for reasons that seem fairly obvious to me but which they purposely obscure.

While it might be “big” that the paper of record continues to foist UFO bullshit on America, having spoken to Blumenthal and to Times reporters, it’s pretty clear that the editor who publishes this tripe has a personal interest in UFOs. It’s also rather clear that the Times has an ongoing interest in promoting the History channel’s products, including its upcoming DeLonge-fronted To the Stars series. History routinely purchases sponsored articles, advertisements, and wraparounds in the Times, including promotions for The Curse of Oak Island and Project Blue Book.

Don’t believe me?

Well, Blumenthal and Kean offer this not-so-subtle infotainment promotional message in the middle of their article:
Lieutenants Graves and Accoin, along with former American intelligence officials, appear in a six-part History Channel series, “Unidentified: Inside America’s U.F.O. Investigation,” to air beginning Friday. The Times conducted separate interviews with key participants.
Yup, the article is just a big puff piece for the History channel and To the Stars.

What someone really needs to do is to find out how the History channel (owned by A+E Networks, a partnership of Hearst and Disney) can corrupt every institution it touches with fake history, all for … what, exactly? A lousy million mostly elderly viewers on a Friday night? Is that the price of truth?

Megan Fox has a vadge and Wolter doesn't. If it bleeds it leads.

Alternatively, maybe they contacted Wolter either recently or in the past and he was a dick to them. Farfetched, I know.

"In fact, the only people who don’t seem excited are those at the Travel Channel, which are dumping the show with no publicity and no fanfare."

It got a blurb in the TV Guide in their daily highlights for the night. "In fact", I've been seeing promos for the show all week on cable as well.

The TV Guide? What is this — 1975? Maybe there’s a listing for “The Rockford Files” in there!

I guess it must depend on what channels you watch. It would be interesting to see whom they think their ideal viewer is by seeing which channels they have run promos on.

Travel Channel has been heavily promoting Wolter's show. Today is another all day marathon. One of many, over the last few weeks (though only an imbecile like Linus is going to read that as having me watch cable nonstop all day).

It's simply wishful thinking on your part Jason for you to believe that the Travel Channel has already given up on the show. Hey, I'm sure it's only going to be good in an unintentionally humorous way... but let's not just make things up we want to be true. That would be bad form.

Linus
5/28/2019 04:07:43 pm

Really, I didn't know, until I looked on this blog and read your comment that the travel channel had an all day marathon. How would you know that unless you were watching? Please explain.

Jason Colavito link
5/28/2019 04:39:10 pm

I didn't say they gave up on it, only that they aren't really doing everything that they could to promote it. If you aren't watching the Travel Channel, you wouldn't even know it existed. Compare that to History's Tom DeLonge series, which is all over the internet, the newspapers, and TV. Even if you don't watch History, you probably saw something related to it. Even when Expedition Unknown was on Travel they did more to make sure people beyond their core viewers knew it was on.

Well, it’s listed in TV Guide so you’re wrong!

Linus

Good explanation, so instead of sitting on your ass all day watching cable television, you instead sit around reading T.V. guide.

Joe Scales

The above "Joe Scales" is a spoof; but yeah, it only takes a glance at an onscreen channel guide Linus... you imbecile.

No, you said they were "dumping the show with no publicity and no fanfare". I disagree.

Linus

So you consulted the on screen guide, so you are sitting on your ass all day watching cable.

Joe Scales
5/28/2019 08:40:30 pm

No Linus, you imbecile. And boy are you dumb. Dumb enough to think Family Guy is funny. And yeah, it is... for imbeciles such as yourself. You imbecile.

Linus
5/28/2019 02:27:15 pm

Just wondering, do you have a life? I mean, do you spend your entire day watching whatever is on cable? I mean, I am retired but only watch Baseball and Family guy and that only at night. You should have better things to do that sitting and watching the crap that passes now as entertainment.

Hey man, give Linus a break. I mean... it takes him a whole day to see what's on tv. And he likes Family Guy. Because the father's face is really a penis. And Linus likes that. He watches every night. After he waits all day for the onscreen channel guide to get there. Then he knows it's on for sure. The whole day he waits. Because he's also retired. And alone of course. Well, him and his well-stained blanket. At least they have each other. The imbecile and his blanket.

Linus

No, I don't think Peter's face looks like my father's penis. He does kind of look like your penis however, that is when you don't have your three incher stuck in a frog's ass.

Leslie Kean has since written a book on Life after Death

Just like Barbara Frale wrote about the Chinon Parchment - that was nothing new to historians - went on to write a book about the Turin Shroud.

These people don't just believe in the paranormal and fake histories - they believe in anything and everything that's going.

Oh, they went there:

" Scott Wolter is Indiana Jones IRL."
"And like Dr. Henry Walton Jones Jr., Wolter has also searched for the Ark of the Covenant and the Holy Grail"

Well of course Indy is a fictional character so on that level you may be right in a sense (as in both of their credentials are, in a different way, fictitious)....But in the context of the films Indy is, indeed, a real Archaeologist. When the cameras aren't pointed at him I expect he's writing papers, attending conferences, going on normal digs, and so forth.

This has been discussed a few times on the ArchyFantasies podcast in the context of if real Archaeologists should embrace the character or not. The discussions there reflect the fact that this may not necessarily a meaningless point about a fictional character. It's an indirect reflection of how we view, and treat, people who have actual knowledge versus those who just claim genius and leave it there.

Actually, Mr. Scales, Indiana Jones is a fictional character -- not an actor. The actor who has played that character in a series of movies is named Harrison Ford.

Generally speaking fictional stories take place within a fictional universe created by the story. And, within the universe these stories take place in, the character is an Archaeologist. I suggest that the degree to which real world folks who are not Archaeologists can successfully claim the mantle of that fictional character says something unpleasant about our cultural relationship with knowledge and those who have it.

I wouldn't worry if this were the only sign of that frayed relationship. But, sadly, it's not.

What's the word I'm looking for? Oh yeah, imbecile.

I don’t know if anyone else caught it, but the last two nights have been jackpot nights on Coast to Coast AM.

Sunday started with a one hour interview with Luis Elizondo of TTSA. He and George Knapp pumped TTSA and the two Knapp films. Then a two hour interview with Jack Villee.

Last night Noory interviewed Scott Wolter. The pumped his new show, but didn’t sound excited. Wolter said the Travel Channel needed to see big ratings to continue the show.

This week LA Marzulli and David Moore are also guests.

Well, I wasn't wrong when I said this week would mark the start of a summer flood of fringe content. I imagine that America Unearthed is fairly expensive by Travel Channel standards, particularly given the cinematic recreations and the location shooting. I can't help but think it won't get many more viewers than the reruns that usually fill the timeslot. I'm going to guess around 500K live plus same day viewers, and I'll be shocked if it comes close to a million. We'll find out on Thursday when the Tuesday ratings results are released.

"I imagine" is perilously close to "I don't know." Wouldn't "The Travel Channel" imply location shooting? "Rick Steves' Europe" certainly does it, and they shoot with a crew of three.

I don't know what "all over the internet" even means but I only know about DeLonge and his group from this site. Gave up on Coast to Coast after Art Bell went crazy for the last time and don't read the NYT.

#100 of the top 100... and 441K so far. Pretty good guess, and not good numbers at all for our boy Wolter. The only thing he can hope for is that folks who didn't stay up till 10pm watch him on demand to bump those numbers up. But it would have to be a pretty big bump... otherwise, can we predict a Saturday burn-off for future viewing?

Apparently the military regards skeptics as just something else.
You know, the military who wear important uniforms but who believe in the same crap as Scott Wolter, Dan Brown, Graham Hancock and Frank Joseph. They are just as clueless as the believers in the parting of the Red Sea.

Well, Jason, I’ll have you know that Mike Diamante of PunkRockAndUFOs also talked with Uncle Ralph Blumenthal and totally refutes your dastardly allegations of shilling for the History Channel.

https://www.punkrockandufos.com/blog/2019/5/28/exclusive-journalist-ralph-blumenthal-talks-new-york-times-latest-ufo-coverage

MIKE: Some detractors of efforts of To The Stars, and these stories in general are quick to paint a picture as the release of the story is timed to collaborate with the debut episode of “Unidentified.”

RALPH: “We knew the History Channel had put this series together, and we watched that and give them credit in the piece, and saw what they said in the series and went after them (witnesses) because obviously we weren’t going to take it from the TV; we wanted to conduct our own interview, so we did meet with Ryan Graves in New York, and Helene spoke with Danny Accoin over the phone,” Blumenthal said.”

There are many places in the paper for shows to be reviewed and featured. This was not the purpose of this article. We wanted to establish the credibility of these witnesses on our own, and not part of any other effort, program or institution. It was not reliant on anybody but our own reporting.”

=============

Blumenthal is aware of the infighting, division and skepticism among the UFO community, but ultimately believes this story is one “of the biggest of our time. ”The effort from the journalists at the New York Times continues to be done by journalists only.

“We really try to keep out distance from To The Stars because we think it helps our credibility to be separate,” Blumenthal said.” They are doing what they are doing, and they’ve done some really interesting, important things, but we have to do what we do at the New York Times.

To maintain our standards and credibility we have to do it our own way. We are doing it by our interviews the way we always do everything, and it keeps our reporting pure and obviously respected elsewhere. We aren’t taking anything from anybody; we are investigating ourselves.”

I love the part where he thinks that it is helpful to admit that the ideas are coming from To the Stars and that they are simply redoing TTS's work to give it a veneer of credibility. "We saw this on TV and then went and talked to the same guys ourselves" doesn't really scream enterprise journalism to me.

After a few double Cape Cods I was going to try to watch the first episode of America Unearthed. But then I tuned into the re-run preceding it just in time to see Wolter rambling about the Templars taking the bones of Jesus and Mary Mag to America or wherever. The stupidity burned like fire and no amount of Goose will douse the flame if I continue watching. So, my evening viewing preference has shifted to oogling Julianne Hough on American Idol.

I look forward to the review, though.

Russell Targ, Charles Tart and Harold Puthoff are very old today -- but they are just as stupid as they were during the 1970s. Please don't tell me these people are more intelligent than Scott Wolter.
