Congressional Ancient Astronaut Theorist to Lead House Search for Crashed UFOs

According to an article in The Guardian, the House Oversight Committee is in the early stages of planning a hearing into David Grusch's claim to have heard from other people in the intelligence community that the U.S. has captured alien spaceships. According to the newspaper, Rep. Tim Burchett, the far-right election denier who appeared on Ancient Aliens to claim that the Bible is full of flying saucers, will lead the House investigation into crashed UFOs ahead of the hearing, whose date will be set in a few weeks' time. “Congressman Burchett’s office is working through logistics, including a witness list of the most credible witnesses and sources who would be able to speak openly at an unclassified hearing,” a spokesperson said.

I'm not on Twitter, so I couldn't reply there, but regarding that former U.S. Marine who claims he saw U.S. forces loading weapons onto a UFO:

I don't mean the following to undermine his credibility or as an attack on him, but it does say something about the Daily Mail's fact-checkers and the judgement of the reporter and the editors. The Daily Mail claims "[h]e provided his unblemished four-year service record" to them, and the article includes images of his discharge paperwork. In fact, his four-year service record IS blemished.

He was discharged with a status of General (Under Honorable Conditions). That's not the same as an Honorable Discharge, which I suspect the writer and editors confused it for. It's a step below an Honorable Discharge. It's usually used when a service member has had relatively minor but significant disciplinary actions or has otherwise failed to meet military standards.

The decorations listed on his DD214 do actually provide some indirect substantiation for his story of being deployed to Indonesia for humanitarian relief operations (but see my last paragraph below). But despite the Daily Mail repeatedly citing them as if he were a highly decorated veteran and that should lend credence to his story, they're actually notable for being a bit damning by faint praise.

The "certificate of appreciation" and "letter of appreciation" aren't formal military decorations - they literally just mean somebody gave him some sort of formal thanks in writing for some sort of service. They're often just pro forma thanks given to everyone in a unit from a civilian official, such as a mayor thanking everyone in a unit who came to their city as part of a relief operation.

The National Defense Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Sea Service Deployment Ribbon, and Humanitarian Service Medal are all just campaign ribbons. The first two would have been awarded to literally every U.S. service member during the period he served who managed to complete a single term of enlistment without major screw-ups, the SSDR just means he was deployed overseas, and the HSM just means he was deployed as part of a humanitarian relief operation. Those are literally the minimum possible awards and decorations he could have received for serving in that period and deploying overseas as part of a humanitarian relief operation.

The Sharpshooter Rifle Badge is one notch above the minimum necessary qualification, so at least that one's not the literal bare minimum he could have achieved. But it just means he performed well on the target range.

One other oddity on his DD214. It lists 0 "Foreign Service" time. If he spent even one day on shore in Indonesia as part of a humanitarian relief operation, that should be reflected in the "Foreign Service" section of his DD214. It isn't. He does have 3 months and 29 days of "Sea Service" listed, which is what it sounds like - time at sea. It's actually possible the discrepancy is a bureaucratic oversight, and that he did spend time ashore in Indonesia but it just wasn't properly recorded, and got rolled up into his "Sea Service". But it is kind of interesting. And, again, shows just how little fact-checking the Daily Mail bothered to do.

But you are holding comments in moderation before allowing them to be posted. And you still approved a post directly and repeatedly accusing me of lying (about easily verifiable facts).
