I don't know if there is any great significance to this. They have done pastiches of old shows before. There could be several reasons for this particular one.

Given the intellectual level of the audience and how long the show has been running they probably understand that they can lower production costs by rehashing old material but still make the nut on profits.

The DOI will push to put the Jersey Devil & jackalopes on the endangered species list next.

It may be too late already. Neither has been seen in the wild for ages. We only have some stuffed examples of the once ubiquitous Jackalope. They may have suffered the fate of the Dodo.
